Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali | Production Designer: Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray
DESIGNATION: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - ART
I worked as an assistant director on a Sanjay Leela Bhansali set, which was both challenging and fun. My responsibility was to ensure that the frames looked aesthetically pleasing and captured the nuances of the scenes during the 300-day shoot. Four other directors were working on the project alongside SLB, and we all worked together to maintain the visual tone of the show that he had set. Sanjay Sir's storytelling is known for its meticulous use of colour palettes, and we explored various earthy browns, subdued greens, and desaturated hues of primary colours. Working with him has allowed me to expand my knowledge of fabrics and textures, such as velvet, tissue, organza, malmal, and vintage silhouettes. Sourcing furniture pieces from an era that blended Indian and British styles was an especially exciting part of the job. It was exhilarating to see my skills grow and witness the positive impact of his guidance. I also had an incredible opportunity to be deeply involved in script supervision, background action, rehearsals, and much more. As they say, on a Bhansali set, you have to wear many hats. This experience gave me a firsthand understanding of the complexities of filmmaking. Now, as a Production Designer, it allows me to envision and bring to life different worlds for various scripts.
